Prepare for Spring freshet

Property owners are reminded to take appropriate measures to protect their property and buildings from potential rising waters and drainage issues. Taking proactive measures and assessing property and buildings for drainage issues before freshet begins is a proactive measure residents can take to help prevent or minimize potential damage. Now is the time to prepare if you live in vulnerable areas, on or near floodplains, or if you have experienced spring flooding previously. Report flooding or depleted sand or sandbags to the EOC. Please see the links below for current information about freshet conditions in the region.

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen Emergency Operations Centre (RDOS EOC) continues to provide information and support to residents impacted by the Christie Mountain Wildfire.

For properties in the area, there is no imminent wildfire threat at this time. Please be aware of equipment and crews in the area. Boaters on Skaha Lake are asked to stay clear of aircraft conducting wildfire operations. BC Wildfire Service is still working in the area and spot fires and smoke may be visible

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen Emergency Operations Centre (RDOS EOC) has RESCINDED the Evacuation Alert for 319 properties issued on August 25, 2020, in Heritage Hills in Electoral Area “D”. 
The State of Local Emergency issued on August 18, 2020 and extended on August 25, 2020, for Electoral Area “D” is now cancelled.

EOC Update: Re-Entry plan for residents under Evacuation Order

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen Emergency Operations Centre (RDOS EOC) has removed 244 propeties under the Heritage Hills Evacuation Order area and are allowed to return home. These properties will remain under an Evacuation Alert.

The 75 properties accessed via Christie Mountain Lane and Bighorn Trail remain under Evacuation Order.

The Evacuation Alert issued for 116 properties for Upper Carmi Area and Skaha Bluffs Provincial Park has been lifted.

EOC Update: August 24 2020 2pm Re-entry plans underway for residents under Evacuation Order

Re-entry plans are being finalized by Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) staff to provide residents under Evacuation Order in Heritage Hills (Electoral Area "D") safe access to return to their homes. The Evacuation Order and Alert are still in effect and wildfire crews and equipment remain in the area. Once the area has been deemed safe for re-entry, residents will have access to their homes in a staged approach.

Representatives from the RDOS and the City of Penticton will be in attendance to provide updates and answer questions. Media are invited to attend the news conference which will take place inside the Lakeside Resort and Conference Centre at 21 Lakeshore Drive, Penticton, BC. Any media that attend in person are encouraged to wear a mask and follow requirements for physical distancing.

EOC Update: Aug 24, 2020 7:00 am Evacuation Order Heritage Hills

Re-entry plans are being finalized to provide residents under Evacuation Order in Heritage Hills (Electoral Area "D") safe access to return to their homes. Wildfire crews and equipment remain in the area. 

Geotechnical work is underway and crews are working to ensure the safety of homes, driveways and retaining walls as well as critical infrastructure including gas, power and water lines. Trees and other potential dangers must also be assessed.The objective is to return people as soon as possible. The RDOS is working closely with BC Parks to ensure the safety and security of Skaha Bluffs Provincial Park. 

The Evacuation Order will remain in place until further notice to ensure public safety.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this difficult time.

August 22 - EOC Update:   

An EVACUATION ORDER remains in effect for 319 properties in the Heritage Hills area south of Penticton in Electoral Area “D” in the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) due to the Christie Mountain Wildfire.  Roadblocks remain in place within the Regional District. Roadblocks are in place to ensure that the Fire Fighters have unobstructed and safe access to these areas. A reminder to stay clear of the affected areas.

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), is your primary source for the most up-to-date  information for current Evacuation Orders, for where Emergency Support Services (ESS) for residents in the RDOS are available. While the Evacuation Orders are still in effect, you will be provided support.

 

Christie Mountain wildfire evacuees who need to renew support services and are still relocated within the Penticton area, please go to the Reception Center at 199 Ellis St. Penticton, between 9:00 am and 6:00 pm.

 

Christie Mountain wildfire evacuees who need to renew support services and are relocated outside the Penticton area should contact Emergency Support Services (ESS) at 250-490-4225 between 9:00 am and 6:00 pm.  After Hours please leave a message and ESS will get back to you within 1 business day.

At this, the Evacuation Centre is located at 199 Ellis St. is open between 9:00 am and 6:00pm.

ESS can help if you:

  • Need to renew any services
  • Are incapacitated and need assistance with leaving your home under an Evacuation Alert (self-evacuation) or Evacuation Order
  • Need to find out if you are eligible to receive support services

The Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen (RDOS) and the City of Penticton will host a joint news conference today at 12:00 pm to provide an update on the Christie Mountain Wildfire. Representatives from the BC Wildfire Service, the RDOS and the City of Penticton will be in attendance to provide updates and answer questions. Media are welcome to attend the news conference which will take place at the Penticton Lakeside Resort and Conference Centre (Salon C) at 21 Lakeshore Drive, Penticton, BC. Any media that attend in person are encouraged to wear a mask and follow protocols for social distancing. The City and RDOS are introducing additional technology at today’s event to improve the audio available. Media will have access to a press box with a direct feed from the podium microphone.

Only representatives with the media will be allowed to attend in person. Residents can watch the news conference live through the City of Penticton’s Facebook account (@cityofpenticton). A video recording will be posted to the RDOS and City of Penticton YouTube channels following the news conference.

BC Wildfire Service Update: Christie Mountain Wildfire

August 20, 2020 9:38 pm: An increased amount of structural protection teams will be stationed throughout the community starting tomorrow morning to perform assessments and proactively triage infrastructure. This action is a precautionary measure to mitigate risk to homes in the area ahead of an approaching weather system that may cause challenging fire behaviour.

9:00 pm August 18, 2020 - Evacuation Alert for Upper Carmi

An Evacuation Alert has been issued by the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen Emergency Operations Centre (RDOS EOC). The Regional EOC has placed 116 civic addresses in Upper Carmi area and one home north of Heritage Hills on Eastside Rd under Evacuation Alert due to a wildfire. Skaha Bluffs Provincial Park is also under Evacuation Alert.

An Evacuation Alert has been issued to prepare residents, businesses and visitors to evacuate their premises or property in the event an Evacuation Order is issued. The RDOS EOC is working with BC Wildfire to assess the situation. Property owners will be given as much advance notice as possible prior to an Evacuation Order, however residents may receive limited notice due to changing conditions.

Residents and property owners are strongly advised to take proactive measures to prepare for an Evacuation Order. Please see the information listed below.

The City of Penticton has issued an Evacuation Alert for 3,669 properties located in the south east portion of the City.  The alert area includes properties within the following street boundaries.

Category 2 and category 3 fire prohibitions to start in Kamloops Fire Centre

Effective at 12:00 pm (noon) on Wednesday, July 29, 2020, Category 2 and Category 3 open fires, as well as other equipment and activities will be prohibited throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre. This prohibition is being enacted to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety.
